#TuesdayCareerExploration
Someone recently shared a real story.
A candidate was helped, recommended, and successfully shortlisted for a job interview, something many people pray and hope for. But guess what? He missed the interview.
His reason?
“I forgot I had an interview that day.”
He went back, pleading for another chance. The response he got was simple and powerful:
“My job ended when I helped you get shortlisted. Showing up and passing the interview is your responsibility.”
That right there is the reality many people avoid.
Every day, people say, “I don’t have connections,” “Nobody is helping me,” “There are no opportunities,” but the truth is, even when opportunities come, many still lose them, not because they lack help, but because they lack responsibility.
There’s a quote that fits perfectly here:
“He that is good at making excuses is seldom good for anything else.”
Let’s bring it closer home. Every year, graduates are given opportunities through initiatives by organizations like the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), including training programs, career pathways, and real chances to grow. But what happens?
Some candidates dismiss it as a #scam, refuse to register for #screening tests, ignore #emails and calls, or even say, “Give it to someone else.” Then months later, they come back saying, “I saw your message, is the opportunity still available?” and the answer is usually, No!
Here’s the hard truth. An uninformed graduate or professional who refuses to #verify information, ignores opportunities, or won’t take simple steps like writing a test or attending an interview is not just unlucky, but irresponsible.
This is your reminder, verify opportunities, don’t dismiss them blindly, show up, interviews, tests, deadlines matter, stop leading with excuses, take ownership of your career.
You may not control every opportunity that comes your way, but you are fully responsible for what you do with the ones that do.
Equip yourself, stay ready, act when it matters. Sometimes, it’s not the opportunities that are scarce, but the #responsibility.
